What it's like
The Coach House Inn is an independent bar, restaurant and small hotel on Northgate Street, right by the Town Hall, Cathedral and Storyhouse. It is more polished pub-with-rooms than old-local boozer, which is exactly why it is useful.
The location does a lot of the work. If you are already around the Cathedral, Storyhouse, Town Hall or Chester Market, The Coach House is the obvious central fallback for a proper sit-down meal, breakfast, a drink or a room upstairs.
It feels comfortable rather than surprising: pub classics, breakfasts, burgers, roasts, cocktails, wine, beer and enough menu range for mixed groups. That makes it very handy, even if it is not the place for a wildly original night out.
Worth knowing
The Coach House is not the most exciting answer in Chester, but it is often the most useful answer on Northgate Street. Central, comfortable, food-focused and practical. There are worse sins than being exactly where people need lunch.
Plan your visit
- Address
- 39 Northgate Street, Chester CH1 2HQ, between the Town Hall, Cathedral and Storyhouse.
- Hours
- The venue lists breakfast from 10:00 to 11:30, food until 21:00 Monday-Saturday and 20:00 Sunday, with drinks later. Check direct before relying on exact times.
- Food
- Pub and inn cooking: breakfasts, burgers, mains, Sunday roasts, desserts, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free-adaptable dishes.
- What to order
- Use it for breakfast, a central lunch, burgers, a Sunday roast or the safer pub classics. The Sunday roasts are popular, so do not leave it too late.
- Rooms
- There are eight rooms upstairs. Useful for location; ask about quieter rooms if city-centre noise is a concern.
- Booking needed?
- Sensible for meals at busy times and essential if you want the roast or a group table.
- Outdoor seating
- Some outdoor seating is listed, but this is not the reason to choose it. Pick it for location and food, not for a garden.
- Kids
- Good for children and family meals, with a children's menu listed.
- Dogs
- Dog policy is not clear enough to rely on. Check direct before turning up with one.
- Access
- A wheelchair-accessible entrance is listed, but older central buildings can still be fiddly. Check direct if access is important.
- Price feel
- ££. Comfortable central pub-with-rooms pricing, not bargain-pub territory.
How to use it
- For a visitor day, use it as the central anchor: Cathedral, Storyhouse, Town Hall, market, then food or a drink here.
- For Sunday lunch, book and go early enough that the roast has not become a negotiation.
- For hotel stays, location is the win. Ask about room position if you are sensitive to late street noise.
- For drinks only, it works, but Northgate Street has more characterful pub options nearby if you are just doing pints.
What's on and practical notes
The Coach House is more central inn, food stop and hotel than events pub. Check direct for private meals, seasonal menus and room availability.
