CHESTER MARKET.

4.4

Chester Market is the city's modern food hall and indoor market at Exchange Square, and it belongs in the restaurants section because most visitors use it as somewhere to eat, drink, and browse in one stop. The strength is variety: independent food traders, communal tables, coffee, drinks, and a lively feel that works for groups who cannot agree on one cuisine. It is also one of the safest rainy-day picks in the centre.

What it is actually like.

Chester's new market sits at the heart of the Northgate development and pitches itself as a "modern traditional market" — global food, local produce, and a bit of a social hub rolled into one. The building itself is contemporary and spacious but manages to hold onto some traditional feel — the stalls are built from English oak, the lighting is decent, and there are a few thoughtful nods to Chester's history if you look for them. It replaced what was a tired and unloved old market that had been failing for years, and most people agree this version is a significant improvement on what came before.

Best for

Lunch on a weekday when it's quieter. The food offer is genuinely good — fresh pasta, global street food, a proper butcher and fishmonger. There's also an Asian supermarket on the produce side. It's the kind of place where you can eat something interesting without booking a restaurant. Also works well as a rainy afternoon option — it's warm, has seating, and there's a big screen and a stage area for when events are on

Avoid if

You hate noise. The acoustics are the one consistent complaint — when it gets busy it can be genuinely deafening, and the hard surfaces do nothing to help that. Also avoid on a Saturday afternoon if you're easily irritated by crowds — the market itself suggests visiting on quieter days and even runs a no-music slot on Tuesday mornings until 10am. And if you've brought a dog, be warned — other people have, and not everyone keeps them under control near the food stalls

Expect

Around 39 stalls when fully occupied, split between food and drink traders and produce. Over 400 seats across three areas including a garden area and a stage. It's open six days — closed Mondays. Evenings are a thing here too, which sets it apart from most markets; the food and drink traders run until 10pm most nights. Clean, functional toilets — which sounds like a low bar but matters more than you'd think in Chester city centre.

Nearby plan

You're already in the Northgate development, so the Picturehouse cinema is right there — six screens, opened November 2023. Storyhouse is just across the square if you want theatre, a gig, or just a coffee in a building that actually has some soul. Northgate Street itself leads you straight down into the historic centre, the Rows, and the Cathedral in about five minutes on foot.

The honest bit

It's earned its reputation. Over six million visits since opening in late 2022 — that's not a fluke. The produce side is genuinely useful for locals rather than just being a tourist backdrop, and the food traders are a cut above the kind of thing you'd find at a generic food hall. The noise issue is real though — if you're going on a busy weekend lunchtime, don't expect a relaxed experience. Go mid-week, take your time, and it's one of the better things Chester has done to its city centre in a long time.

✻ What people tend to mention

From the latest fetched Google reviews, Chester Market is mostly being talked about for the food, the atmosphere and busy periods. In plain English: whether the food felt worth the stop, whether the room had the right feel and whether queues, waits or peak times affect the visit. For somewhere food-led, that is a nudge to check the current menu, busy-time service and whether the room suits the sort of meal you have in mind. There are also practical notes around busy periods, so this is one of those pages where checking the newest Google reviews is not just theatre.
