TTDC Things to do in Chester

4 picks

Pubs by the river in Chester.

I - THE RIVER

Chester is compact, and the Dee does a lot of the scenic work. The useful river-pub question is not which venue is nearest water, but which one makes the river part of the plan.

II - THE SHORTLIST

This is deliberately not a long list. There are only a few river-led answers that earn it, so the guide stays tight instead of dragging in pubs that are merely river-adjacent.

III - THE CAVEAT

River plans are seasonal, weather-led and shoe-dependent. The Boathouse is obvious, The Ship is calmer, The Mount asks for a climb, and Hickory's is here with an asterisk.

DEE-SIDE RULE

Use The Groves for the easy version; cross to Handbridge or climb to Boughton when you want the quieter reward.

If the view is the point, read the weather before you make promises to the group chat.

Editor-curated. River plans work best when the walk, weather and appetite are all being honest with each other.

BEST OBVIOUS RIVERSIDE PUB

The Boathouse & Riverside Rooms.

The Dee-side answer most visitors understand immediately.

The Boathouse is where the river pub conversation starts: right on The Groves, easy to find, good for meet-ups and helped enormously by the view. It is not the quiet choice, but it is the obvious one for a reason.

Best when the river is part of the plan; avoid if you need hidden calm on a warm Saturday.

BEST QUIETER HANDBRIDGE OPTION

The Ship Inn.

Cross the Old Dee Bridge and the mood changes quickly. The Ship Inn is more neighbourhood pub than visitor funnel, especially useful after a riverside or Meadows walk.

BEST VIEW WITH A PINT

The Mount Inn.

The Mount is the reward for leaving the obvious circuit. The pub is unfussy; the beer garden view over the Dee is the argument.

The next-best options.

Useful when the top three are full or you want a slightly different room.

IV ✻ Good to know

Useful questions, properly answered.

Can you walk between all four?

The Boathouse to Hickory's to The Ship Inn is an easy half-hour stroll along the Dee, mostly flat. Adding The Mount Inn means another fifteen uphill minutes from the Boughton end.

Which river pub is best in winter?

The Ship Inn, comfortably. Low ceilings and a warm pub room beat a river view through rain.

Which is best for a dog after a Meadows walk?

The Ship Inn or Hickory's are the most useful choices after a Meadows walk. Both are dog-friendly and both sit within a short walk of the path.

Are these all directly on the river?

The Boathouse and Hickory's are directly by the Dee. The Ship Inn is just over the Old Dee Bridge in Handbridge. The Mount Inn is about the view rather than the waterline.
