What it's like
Chester Zoo is a large conservation zoo at Upton-by-Chester, with animal habitats, gardens, indoor houses, play areas, food outlets, the Lazy River boat ride and free on-site parking.
Chester Zoo is not a city-centre add-on. It is the day. The site is large, leafy and spread out enough that a good visit feels closer to a long park walk than a neat checklist of animals.
That scale is the reason people love it and the reason some people leave exhausted. You can see elephants, orangutans, penguins, jaguars, rhinos, lemurs, tropical houses, play areas and gardens, but not by drifting in at lunchtime and hoping the map folds itself into common sense.
Worth knowing
Chester Zoo is excellent, but it is not effortless. Treat it as a full-day, weather-aware, walking-heavy plan and it earns the ticket price. Treat it as a quick add-on after the Rows and it will punish everyone’s feet and patience.
Plan your visit
- Address
- Chester Zoo, Upton-by-Chester, Chester CH2 1EU.
- Opening
- The zoo opens daily from 10:00. Summer 2026 hours are 10:00-17:00 until 22 July, then 10:00-18:00 from 23 July to 1 September, with selected Afterglow dates open to 20:00.
- Last entry
- Last admission is one hour before closing, or 30 minutes before closing for members.
- Tickets
- Book online for the best price. Chester Zoo advertises online savings of up to 20%, date-based prices, family tickets, flexible tickets and standard admission from the ticket office after 09:30 on the day.
- Family tickets
- The official ticket store currently lists 3-person family/group tickets at £89 and 4-person family/group tickets at £119.
- Parking
- Free on-site parking is listed by the zoo. Arrive early on busy days because the entrance and car park rhythm can still be slow.
- Food
- There are multiple food outlets, including The Oakfield, Bembe Grill, Amboseli Restaurant, June’s Food Court, Jaguar Coffee House, House of Sumatra and Manado Street Kitchen. Picnics are also sensible.
- Access
- The accessibility page confirms free carer admission with supporting documents, BSL videos in some areas, an accessibility contact email and advice for mobility, sensory needs, assistance dogs and social stories.
- Map
- Use the Chester Zoo app or download the PDF map before going. The official food-and-retail page says a map is useful across 130 acres.
- Indoor backup
- Use indoor habitats such as Monsoon Forest and other covered spaces as weather breaks rather than treating the whole day as outdoor-only.
How to use it
- Book tickets online and check the day’s closing time before you promise anyone an after-school sprint round the zoo.
- Arrive close to opening if you want a calmer entrance, better parking rhythm and a less frantic first hour.
- Download the map or app before leaving home, then plan around zones, toilets, food and indoor stops.
- Bring water, sensible shoes and a picnic if you are watching the spend.
- Do not pair it with a packed city-centre itinerary unless you enjoy turning a day out into logistics admin.

Yes if you can. The official site advertises savings of up to 20% online, with tickets varying by date and ticket type.
