What it's like
BONOBO Bar & Canteen is a two-floor St John Street bar and canteen serving Detroit-style pizza, burgers, wings, cocktails and brunch packages, with games, screens, music and private-hire space.
BONOBO changes character by the hour. Earlier, it can be food, cocktails and a fairly easy group table. Later, the canteen bit gives way to the bar bit, and the upstairs space starts doing what upstairs spaces do.
The useful thing is that it does not pretend to be a cosy restaurant. It is a group-night tool: pizza, burgers, cocktails, brunch, screens, games, music and enough momentum to carry a birthday that was never going to end early.
Worth knowing
BONOBO is very good at the jobs quiet restaurants are bad at: brunch packages, group momentum, late music and parties. Do not punish it for being loud if loud was on the label.
Plan your visit
- Address
- 10 St John Street, Chester CH1 1DA, near the Amphitheatre, Eastgate Street and Grosvenor Park end of town.
- Hours
- Directory data shows late hours across much of the week, but the venue's own site currently emphasises Thursday-Sunday. Check direct before travelling, especially Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Food
- Detroit-style pizza, dirty burgers, wings, small plates, brunch food and bar-canteen staples.
- What to order
- Pizza is the sensible anchor, especially for groups and brunch. Burgers and wings are the other obvious orders.
- Bottomless brunch
- Weekend bottomless brunch is one of the clearest reasons to book. Check current timings, price, upgrade rules and group terms direct.
- Booking needed?
- Yes for brunch, groups, private hire, parties and weekends.
- Outdoor seating
- Outdoor seating is listed, useful for air and a reset rather than a calm terrace meal.
- Dogs
- Dog policy is not clear enough to rely on. Check direct before arriving with one.
- Access
- Wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating and toilet are listed. Check direct for upstairs events or private hire.
- Parking
- Use paid city-centre parking; there is no useful venue parking plan.
- Good for kids?
- No for the main use case. Some daytime private events may differ, but treat it as an adult group venue.
- Price feel
- ££. Brunch packages can feel good value if service keeps pace.
How to use it
- Book the thing you actually want: brunch, party, private hire, food table or late drinks. Do not improvise a big group at the door.
- If doing bottomless brunch, arrive on time and read the package rules before everyone starts negotiating with cocktails.
- Use the food to carry the night, not as a fine-dining test.
- For a calmer start, walk the Amphitheatre or Roman Gardens first, then accept that the night has stopped being cultural.
