Afterglow is Chester Zoo’s late-opening summer event. It runs from Friday 31 July to Sunday 16 August 2026, excluding Monday 3 and Monday 10 August.
The short version: an ordinary full-day zoo ticket includes the event, evening-only tickets get you in from 3pm, and the site stays open until 8pm. It is still a zoo visit, but with discos, comedy, live music, dinosaurs and a few more glowing objects than the animals usually request.

Which Ticket Do You Need?
Full-day ticket
Choose this if the animals are the main event and Afterglow is the extra bit. Entry starts at 10am and the ticket covers the late opening through to 8pm.
It is the sensible option for a first visit, but it makes for a long day. Do not arrive at opening time with small children and assume everyone will remain reasonable until the final disco song.
Evening-only ticket
Evening tickets start from 3pm and cost less than a full-day visit. They suit members’ guests, repeat visitors and families who mainly want the entertainment programme.
The trade-off is obvious: five hours is enough for selected animals and the event zones, not a relaxed lap of the entire zoo.
Members
Chester Zoo says members can attend Afterglow as part of their membership and do not need to book. Members can also bring friends or family on a reduced evening ticket, currently listed at £10, provided the member attends with them.
Check the current member terms before promising six cousins a cheap night out.
What Is Actually On?
The programme is spread around six zones. You do not need to do all six, but knowing where the useful bits are will save some aimless marching.
Entrance entertainment
The entrance area has puppets and stilt walkers, with giraffes nearby. It gives the event an immediate sense of occasion without requiring any planning.
Dino Discovery
The Stableyard Lawn becomes the dinosaur area, with meet-and-greets, a dig, virtual reality, Ranger Academy activities and a new Ankylosaurus. This is the obvious priority for younger dinosaur people and the adults now obliged to know every species.
Jungle Disco
Near the penguins and chimpanzees, the Jungle Disco has three music channels, UV face paint and LED batons. The official programme also lists an over-18 session from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
Sounds Of Summer
The Education Lawn hosts global music, workshops and a pop-up bar. This is the better stop for adults who would like the evening to contain something other than running between activities.
Laughter Hub
Near June’s Food Court and the play area, the Laughter Hub mixes comedy, bubbles and walkabout entertainment. Its location makes it easy to combine with food or a play stop.
Ranger Basecamp
In Heart of Africa, Ranger Basecamp runs from 5pm to 7.30pm with talks, activities and puppets. Put this into the plan if the animal and conservation side matters more than the disco.
How To Use An Evening Ticket
For an evening-only visit, pick two anchor activities rather than attempting a military sweep of the zoo.
Start with animals between 3pm and 5pm, when you still have a decent window before houses close. Move towards Ranger Basecamp or Dino Discovery next, then use food and the music or comedy zones for the final part of the evening.
If you have very young children, reverse the logic: do their must-see entertainment first, then treat everything else as a bonus. A carefully optimised itinerary has limited authority over a tired four-year-old.
Food, Rides And Extra Costs
Food and drink outlets operate around the zoo, including June’s Food Court and the pop-up bar by Sounds of Summer. Opening times and queues vary, so eating slightly earlier than everyone else remains a sound plan.
Fairground rides cost extra. Budget for them separately or establish the answer before walking past them.
Parking, Travel And Rain
Chester Zoo has free on-site parking. Arrive with enough time for the walk from the car park, ticket checks and the inevitable discussion about toilets before anyone has seen an animal.
If you are travelling without a car, check current bus times for the return journey as well as the outward one. The event finishes later than a normal daytime visit.
The Zoo’s Rainy Day Guarantee applies if there is continuous rain for three hours, with a free return visit under its published terms. That is useful protection, not an instruction to leave the waterproofs at home.
Who It Works For
Members and repeat visitors get the easiest decision: the later hours make a familiar zoo trip feel different without needing a full day off.
For a first visit, take the full-day ticket if seeing the animals properly matters. The evening ticket is better for a shorter trip built around the entertainment. It is not enough time for an unhurried lap of the entire zoo.
Busy event days will not suit everyone, and some animals may be indoors or out of view by evening. They have not read your itinerary.
