What it's like
Be At One Chester is the Stonegate cocktail bar in the basement at 39-41 Watergate Street, with three vaulted rooms, a long cocktail list, happy hour, masterclasses and late weekend hours.
Be At One took over the old Fiesta Havana basement, so the bones are familiar if you have been out in Chester for a while: brick vaults, several rooms, music up, cocktails moving fast and very little interest in being subtle.
The setting is oddly grand for what is basically a party bar. It sits under Bishop Lloyd's House, one of the best buildings on the Rows, then immediately gets on with the business of 2-for-1 cocktails and people shouting along to the chorus.
Worth knowing
It is a Stonegate chain bar in a basement that would probably rather be something stranger and more local. Still, the offer works, the staff know how to handle groups, and Saturday closing time gives it a job independent pubs do not always want.
Plan your visit
- Address
- 39-41 Watergate Street, Chester CH1 2LB, in the basement near Bishop Lloyd's House and the Rows.
- Hours
- Current listed hours run from late afternoon to late night, with Saturday currently listed 13:00-03:00. Check direct for bank holidays, race days and private events.
- Food
- Do not build dinner around it. Use nearby restaurants first, then come here for cocktails.
- What to order
- The point is cocktails, especially during happy hour. If you are in a group, agree the round before you reach the bar or everyone will age visibly.
- Happy hour
- The Chester page currently promotes 2-for-1 cocktails, with different timings by day. Check direct before relying on the offer.
- Booking needed?
- Yes for masterclasses, parties and bigger groups. Weekend walk-ins may involve queuing.
- Dress code
- Smart-casual is the safest read. Avoid sportswear, tracksuits and hats if you do not want the door conversation.
- Outdoor seating
- No meaningful outdoor setup. This is a basement bar.
- Dogs
- No. Assistance dogs aside, this is not the dog-friendly part of a Watergate Street plan.
- Access
- Expect basement stairs and more stairs for toilets/private rooms. Check direct if anyone in the group has mobility needs.
- Parking
- No venue parking. Use city-centre car parks or taxis; race days make Watergate Street awkward.
- Good for kids?
- No. This is an adult cocktail bar.
- Price feel
- ££. Happy hour helps, but cocktail rounds still stack up fast.
How to use it
- Eat first, then use Be At One as the noisy part of the evening.
- If the 2-for-1 offer is the reason you are going, check the current times and order with some patience. Two cocktails per person slows the bar down by design.
- For masterclasses, book ahead and treat it as an activity, not a spontaneous add-on.
- For a softer start, use Barlounge, Assembly or Watergates first, then come here when the plan has stopped pretending to be civilised.
